Parents take day to get involved with their kids' education

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Ansley Dunham is eating lunch in the school cafeteria just like any other day. But this time, she has a special guest.
Elizabeth Dunham is one of fifty moms and dads who came to help out today, doing everything from lunch duty and fielding gym class to working in the classroom and decorating signs.
I like for them to know that mom's right down the road and involved in their education and there when they need me to be," Dunham said.
Principal Beth Schad invited parents to come out and volunteer to help out teachers. But she says the impact on the kids is immeasurable.
"Anytime that a parent comes for a child at school, oh it's a wonderful thing because are excited that somebody came to see them and they can show off to all their friends that their parent came," Schad said.
But it's not just moms. Lieutenant Richard Roundtree founded Dads in Action to help expose children to men in schools -- an area that is so often dominated by women.
"Most men don't think there's an active role for them in the education process," Roundtree said. "Seeing a male in the classroom, eating lunch with the kids in the hall, the kids gravitate to that and that experience is invaluable."
And Principal Schad hopes to turn this one day, into a permanent partnership.
"We are all in this together and I need their help," she said.
Today's celebration comes in the middle of American Education Week, which has been celebrated in Richmond County schools since Monday.
