Georgia mental hospital stops admitting patients

Associated Press

November 20, 2009 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A state official says Georgia's largest mental hospital will stop admitting new patients. The Telegraph newspaper in Macon reports that Thomas Wilson, spokesman for the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, says Central State hospital in Milledgeville will remain open. But Wilson says new patients are being diverted to the state's other facilities. Federal investigators visited Central State about two weeks ago as a follow-up to an ongoing investigation of the state's psychiatric hospitals. Wilson says that among other things, investigators found problems with the physical environment. He said an example would be the need to remove faucets with angles that can be used as an anchor for a rope. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
